Welcome to the Home of the
Spartan Band 1970 - 1979!!!

This page is dedicated to all of the members of the Deptford Spartan Marching Band from 1970 - 1979.

The 1970's were an interesting time in the Spartan Marching History. Many changes occurred during the 70's to include three different Directors.

In the early 70's under the Direction of John Tumminia, the bands continued to have uncharted success winning all kinds of Awards and Trophies.  During the early 70's,  the band was the group to be in and because of the band's success, signs were  created and posted all over Deptford Township that read "Home of the Deptford Spartan Marching Band".

In 1972-73 a group of Band Directors came up with a concept of making a circuit in which bands can compete.  At Deptford High School, this group of Directors formed Tournament of Bands (TOB).  In the beginning of TOB there were a list of 10 rules that all the competing bands had to follow.  John Tumminia and the Spartan Marching Band were one of the founding members of TOB and in 1973 at the first Atlantic Coast Championship, the Spartan Band placed 4th with a Score of 71.90.   The Band continued to win Awards and have a great deal of Success.  At the end of the school year ,John Tumminia left Deptford and became the Band Director at Highland Regional High School, in Blackwood, NJ.

A Band Director from the Gateway School District took over for the recently departed Mr. Tumminia .  Robert  Pannacciulli became the Third Director of the Deptford Spartan Marching Band.  For two years under Mr. Pannacciulli,  the band continued to have great success.  The band did not compete in the newly formed Tournament of Bands, but continued to have outstanding performances.  The Spartans were known for their presence and playing precision.  The band always had eight Tuba players so they could spell SPARTANS with the covers in the Tuba bells.   Mr. Pannacciulli moved to another music position within the Deptford Township School District at the end of 1975, so the search was on for another Director...

David Schmaldeinst was that director.  Mr. Schmaldeinst became the Forth Director of the Spartan Marching Band.  Known for his hard work and dedication to the band, David Schmaldeinst lead the Spartan Marching Band out of the 1970's into new and uncharted territory known as the 1980's...
